DUAL THERAPY. Dual therapy involves the use of an antibiotic and a proton pump inhibitor. Proton pump inhibitors help reduce stomach acid by halting the mechanism that pumps acid into the stomach. The CPC Exam Study Guide - So Which One Is Your Best Choice Exactly?

The CPC exam is hard on purpose.



It examines a candidates medical coding, anatomy and medical terminology skills in a strict test environment, asking the candidate to answer 150 multiple choice questions related to the aforementioned topic areas in just under 6 hours.



6 hours is a long time to be sitting, answering exam questions, even if they are multiple choice questions. Now please don't get the wrong idea as most people do when they hear the term 'Multiple Choice' believing it's going to be A) really easy or B) they have a 50 / 50 chance of guessing the right answer! You get 2.4 minutes per question to determine your answer and although that sounds like an age right now - believe you me, sitting the CPC exam staring at that question - it isn't long enough!



So how exactly should a person study for the exam? What content should they focus on and what areas should they only skim over?



Let’s take a look at the particulars of this exam and determine how one should tackle the problems the test poses.



The questions may involve understanding of anatomy, physiology, the digestive system, the endocrine system, various medicine related questions, radiology, anesthesia or a number of other topics. The test will often use scenarios and ask the candidate to find the best suited answer to the question. (Bang goes the first minute just reading and trying to comprehend the scenario being laid out for you!)



And it's precisely because the CPC Exam covers so much information that candidates should start to prepare as well in advance as possible. While two years experience using medical codes is required to take the exam, a person would need far more experience to take the exam without studying. The vast amount of information needed says that work experience alone will not help you pass the exam. However, it should be noted that those who are coding patients and assisting on a daily basis will likely as not have a much easier time with the CPC exam.

Breast Feeding Problems - Baby Won't Latch

Some people believe that starting baby food earlier will help a baby to sleep through the night, or that mother's milk is not sufficient to meet a baby's nutritional needs. Human milk is designed for one thing - growing babies! While a baby's appetite will vary as they grow, breast milk provides everything they need for those first few months. While breast milk is low in iron, exclusively breastfed babies need less iron since their digestive systems operate differently than formula-fed babies do.

Very young babies are not designed to sleep through the night, they actually need to waken more often so they can get the nutrition and care that they need. While this is a tough stage for parents, it too shall pass. Before you know it your baby will be grown and those wakeful nights will be nothing but a memory. Studies show that feeding a baby solid food does not make them sleep more soundly - it just happens that babies tend to start sleeping longer around the time that parents are most likely to start feeding them cereal.

Once your baby has reached that 6 month mark, you can choose to start introducing food if your baby is ready for it. While most babies find those first few bites of food strange, a baby that is truly not ready yet will push most of the food back out with their tongue. This is because they are not ready yet to swallow textured food and they need a little more time to lose that instinctive tongue thrust.

Some parents choose to wait until 9 months or more to introduce those early meals. Waiting is fine if your baby is happy and growing well. However, you won't want to wait too long. For some little ones, waiting too long can make those initial foods seem too strange and they will reject food.

When you do start feeding your baby, begin with very smooth purees so they can learn to swallow properly before they need to negotiate lumps and textures.

Explaining Morton's Neuroma or Metatarsalgia

Pain in the forefoot, the front part of the foot not including the toes themselves, is known as metatarsalgia as the pain occurs around the metatarsals. It is a symptom of an underlying problem rather than a condition in itself. The pain can be caused by various conditions including inflammatory arthritis and a nerve growth on one of the nerves between the toes, a condition known as Morton's neuroma or Morton's metatarsalgia. Metatarsalgia can occur in anyone but is more common in middle aged and older people and those who participate in high-impact activities in sport.

The forefoot region is the focus of where the stresses are targeted during walking and running, with the first two heads of the metatarsals suffering the greatest forces. During running the metatarsals can endure up to 275 percent of the bodily weight, with estimations made of the foot taking over 100 tons of force over a mile run. The forefoot takes the majority of the burden in activities like running and walking. Inflammatory changes may occur in the little digital nerves supplying the toes, a digital nerve neuritis, caused perhaps by mechanical foot stresses and resulting in foot pain, numbness and pins and needles in the forefoot.

Morton's neuroma is more common in women at the ratio of four women to one man, occurring mostly in a person's forties and worsened by tight shoes. One side is usually affected with the space between the third and fourth metatarsal heads being the most common site. A neuroma, an abnormal growth of part of a nerve, will often not be present on microscopic examination of the nerve and the nerve may be relatively normal or show some pathological changes. The space present between the metatarsals is less between the second and third metatarsals and this may contribute to the problem.

Wearing shoes with very narrow fronts may elevate the stresses of compression across the metatarsal heads and if high heels are worn this extends the toes and puts the structure under the heads and alongside them under increased tension. Typically patients present with pain with pins and needles over one space between the metatarsals with some referred pain to the toe. Variability of the symptoms over months and years can be considerable with exacerbations on wearing tight footwear and improvement on taking them off. Conservative management concentrates on foot care and on reducing the stresses on the digital nerves.

The shoes normally worn by the patient may be contributing but recommendations to change can be difficult if they want to keep wearing fashionable ones. Assessment and provision of a metatarsal pad or a more complicated orthotic can be performed by a podiatrist or a physiotherapist. Conservative treatment may alleviate the foot symptoms sufficiently for the patient to find the result functionally acceptable. The painful area can be injected with corticosteroid or anaesthetic which is not very effective alone. Morton's neuroma can be managed by foot surgery and an initial approach cuts the metatarsal ligament to allow sufficient room for the nerve.

A second surgical approach is to remove the nerve from the locally affected area, cutting out the nerve tissue which might be abnormal but a nerve regrowth might occur and form a troublesome neuroma. The difference in success between the two types of operation has not been scientifically shown with both showing about eighty percent reasonable results. After operation the patient will need to limit their weight bearing as they need to, with a steady approach to wearing footwear again. Patients will notice a loss of feeling in the area between the metatarsals if the nerve has been removed but this is rarely a concern.

The foot pain can persist beyond the operation or an improvement may occur which is then followed by the symptoms recurring. If the decompression operation has been performed the nerve may remain in an irritated state or may grow into a neuroma if the nerve has been cut out. A neuroma can give more troublesome symptoms than the original condition. The neuroma can be again removed and this may improve the situation. Morton's neuroma is the term given to this condition because no medical agreed term has been established.

Nutrition and Oral Health



The food we eat and our oral health are interconnected. From before birth, and from the cradle to the grave, nutrition plays a role in determining the oral health of an individual. Oral health also has an impact on food intake at all ages. Infants can only consume soft food before their teeth develop and enable variety. This is also true for adults who have lost their teeth or are suffering from severe oral health problems.

This article discusses how nutrition and oral health are related, and what should and should not be done to maintain a healthy mouth and a healthy body.

Here are some things your dentist or dental hygienist may tell you about nutrition, if you take the time to ask.

According to a paper published in the Bulletin of the World Health Organization "diet plays an important role in preventing oral diseases including dental caries, dental erosion, developmental defects, oral mucosal diseases and, to a lesser extent, periodontal disease". The paper by, Paula J. Moynihan of the School of Dental Sciences, University of Newcastle upon Tyne in England summarizes the evidence for an association between diet, nutrition and oral diseases.3

Poor nutrition increases the harm from oral and dental diseases. Poor nutrition is also linked to developmental defects of the enamel, increasing likelihood of dental caries.

A balanced diet benefits oral health by strengthening immunity. Michael P. Rethman, DDS, MS, a former president of the American Academy of Periodontology is quoted on perio.org, the website of the AAP: “A diet low in important nutrients can make it harder for the body’s immune system to fight off infection."

Eating high levels of starchy staple foods, fruits and vegetables are linked to low levels of dental caries. So a diet high in starchy staple foods, fruit and vegetables and low in free sugars and fat protects oral and general health.

Sugars are linked to dental caries. Controlling sugar levels in the diet is a key factor in caries prevention. Soft drinks—a key source of acid in the diet—cause dental erosion. It is also best to limit intake of juices which are high in sugars and acid; they could lead to tooth abrasion and gum recession.

Fluoride in drinking water has not eliminated dental caries.

Daily calcium intake is important because it plays a vital role in building density in the alveolar bone that supports the teeth. Calcium is necessary for healthy bones and teeth. Results of a study published in the Journal of Periodontology found that those who take less than 500 milligrams—about half the recommended dietary allowance—of calcium were twice as likely to have periodontal diseases.

Vitamin C plays a role in maintaining and repairing healthy connective tissue, in addition to its antioxidant properties. Those taking less than 60mg recommended dose of vitamin C per day—about one orange—may be at nearly one-and-a-half times the risk of developing severe gingivitis; compared to those who consume three times the recommended dose. Gingivitis causes the gums to become red, swollen and to bleed easily, and is the earliest stage of gum disease.

Uncontrolled diabetes increases risk of periodontal disease. Patients with diabetes should try to reduce cholesterol and serum triglyceride levels through diet and exercise.

Drinking a lot of water keeps the mouth moist, and helps ward off tooth decay and periodontal diseases by washing away food and neutralizing plaque.

Regular brushing and flossing after meals help maintain great oral health. This is especially necessary after eating sticky and sugary foods.

It is important to protect teeth and oral health in older people. Saliva flow—needed for chewing and swallowing food—decreases with age. It may result in old people omitting healthy food from their diet, settling instead for foods of a pulpy, wet, smooth and slimy texture. This can be detrimental to their health.4 Long term problems with dentures or dental problems can also create severe nutritional issues in older adults.

Rosacea Strikes Again

Winter is often a bad time for rosacea sufferers. Heated rooms, hot drinks, hot showers and roll neck sweaters may all contribute to flare ups of redness across the cheeks, nose and anywhere rosacea affected. There are some particular triggers rosacea sufferers should be aware of particularly in winter including alcohol, heating, particularly vented air, high necked jumpers, no air flow in a room, hot drinks and stress.

Despite these flares ups and issues rosacea can be managed effectively even during the winter months:

Zinc and Grape Seed support skin integrity and capillary health. While you can get zinc through your diet during times of stress, both physical and emotional the body has a greater need for nutrients. The body uses more nutrients during stress. This can lead to a worsening of any skin condition. This is even more true with skin issues as the body channels nutrients go to the essential organs first (heart, lungs, liver, kidneys, brain) and lastly the skin.

Improve your circulation. Frequently rosacea sufferers have poor circulation in their hands and feed and ironically too much blood flow in their faces. The result of gentle exercise is both a reduction in stress and an increase in circulation with increased blood flow to the hands and feet but not necessarily the face. Strenuous exercise is not advisable as it may increase blood flow to the face so choose something gentle. Yoga and walking are generally suitable but any exercise that is gentle in nature and avoids getting too hot will be ideal.

Have shorter, warm showers instead of long, hot showers. Avoid getting hot water on your face, instead use a flannel to clear off makeup.

Use mineral make up instead of liquid foundations. Liquid makeup makes it harder for skin to breathe. Mineral makeup also provides better cover and has less additives such as fragrances which may irritate sensitive skin.

Leave the windows open or a fan on. Air flow will minimize the risk of overheating either from a stuffy room or heating.

Topically use a centella based gel. Centella (Gotu kola) is a herb that when used topically helps to strengthen the blood vessels and reduce vascular hypersensitivity.

Overview on Qualitative Data Collection Techniques in International Marketing Research

This article is meant to be a brief review and reminder of some valuable yet often bypassed techniques to collect data on international markets and consumers.

When thinking of market research, surveys are most likely the first technique that comes to ones mind. However, surveys are a quantitative research and, in order to understand customer behavior and the social and cultural context in which our business will operate, we will need to perform some qualitative research as well.

Qualitative methods are most certainly a more appropriate option when in need of researching patterns and attitudes in customer behavior, understand the depth of the environment around the customer, and understand the cultural characteristics then influence a customer – especially when the marketer is not familiar with the country of culture.

There are certain situations where qualitative research alone can provide the marketer with all insights needed to make decisions and take actions; while in some other cases quantitative research might be needed as well.

We will stop by the main qualitative techniques and see how and where they can be employed in international marketing. Craig and Douglas (2000), mention three major types of qualitative data collection techniques:

- observational and quasi-observational techniques;

- projective techniques and depth interviews;

- creative group sessions (synectics).

1. Observational and quasi-observational techniques

Observational techniques involve direct observation of phenomena (in our case, consumers' behavior) in their natural settings. Observational research might be somehow less reliable than quantitative research yet it is more valid and flexible since the marketer is able to change his approach whenever needed.

Disadvantages are given by the limited behavioral variables and the fact that such data might not be generalizable – we can observe a customer's behavior at a given moment and situation but we cannot assume all further customers will act the same.

Quasi-observational techniques are reported to have increased in usage over the past decades, due to the large scale employ of surveillance cameras within stores. Such techniques cost less than pure observational ones since costs associated with video surveillance and taping are far lower than a researcher's wage; the tape can be viewed and analyzed at a later time, at the marketer's convenience. When performing videotaping of consumers' behaviors, they can be asked to give comments and insights upon their thoughts and actions while the conversation itself can be recorded and be further analyzed.

Pure observation: the marketer watches behavior of customers in real-life situation, either in situ or by videotaping the consumers (less intrusive). Videotaping can be specifically recommended when studying patterns of different cultures, since we can easily compare behaviors taped and highlight similarities and / or differences.

Trace measures: consist in collecting and recording traces of consumers' behavior. Such traces can be fingerprints or tear of packages, empty packages, garbage cans analysis and any other ways a marketer can imagine (it's all about creativity here!). In eMarketing, trace measures come under the form of recorded visits and hits – there are numerous professional applications that can help an emarketer analyze the behavior of visitors on his company's website.

Archival measures: can be any type of historical records, public records, archives, libraries, collections of personal documents etc. Such data can prove to be of great use in analyzing behavioral trends and changes in time. Marketers can also identify cultural values and attitudes of a population at a given moment by studying mass media content and advertisement of the timeframe questioned.

Entrapment measures: those are indirect techniques (by comparison to the previously mentioned ones) and consist in asking the respondent to react to a specific stimulus or situation, when the actual subject of investigation is totally different. The marketer plants the real stimulus among many fake ones and studies reactions. The method is quite unobtrusive and the marketer can gather valuable, non-reactive facts. When the respondent becomes aware of the true subject under investigation (s)he might change the behavior and compromise the study.

Protocols: are yet another observational marketing research technique which asks respondents to think out loud and verbally express all their thoughts during the decision-making process. Protocols are of great value for determining the factors of importance for a sale and they can be collected in either real shopping trips or simulated ones.

2. Projective techniques

Such techniques are based on the respondent's performance of certain tasks given by the marketer. The purpose is to have the consumers (respondents) express their unconscious beliefs through the projective stimuli; to express associations towards various symbols, images, signs.

Cooper (1996) suggested that projective techniques can be successfully employed to: - indicate emotional and rational reactions;

- provide verbal and non-verbal communication;

- give permission to express novel ideas;

- encourage fantasy, idiosyncrasy and originality;

- reduce social constraints and censorship;

- encourage group members to share and "open up".

Projective market research techniques can take the following forms, presented below.

Collages – used to understand lifestyles and brand perceptions, respondents are asked to assemble a collage using images and symbols from selected sets of stimuli or from magazines and newspapers of their choice.

Picture completion – certain pictures can be designed to express and visualize the issue under study and respondents have to make associations and / or attribute words to the given pictures.

Analogies and metaphors are used when a larger range of projection is needed, with more complexity and depth of ideas and thoughts on a given brand, product, service, organization. The respondents are asked to freely express their association and analogies towards the object being studied; or they can be asked to select from a set of stimuli (e.g. photos) those that fit the examined subject.

Psycho-drawing is a technique that allows study participants to express a wide range of perceptions by making drawings of what they perceive the brand is (or product, service).

Personalization consists in asking the respondents to treat the brand or product as if it is a person and start making associations or finding images of this person. This technique is especially recommended in order to understand what kind of personality consumers assign to a brand / product / service.

3. In-depth interviews

These techniques of marketing research put an accent on verbal communication and they are efficient especially when trying to discover underlying attitudes and motivations towards a product or a specific market / consumption situation.

Individual in-depth interviews are performed on a person-to-person environment and the interviewer can obtain very specific and precise answers. Such interviews are common in B2B practices of market research, for example when a company conducts a research about a product among their existing corporate customers.

Interviews can be conducted by phone or via internet-based media, from a centralized location: this can greatly reduce costs associated with market research and the results are pretty much as accurate as the face-to-face ones. The only disadvantage would be the lack of non-verbal, visual communication.

Focus groups are basically discussions conducted by a researcher with a group of respondents who are considered to be representative for the target market.

Such meetings are usually held in an informal setting and are moderated by the researcher. Videotaping the sessions is common these days, and it can add more sources of analysis at a later time.

Focus groups are perhaps the ideal technique, if available in terms of costs and time, to test new ideas and concepts towards brands and products; to study customers' response to creative media such as ads and packaging design or to detect trends in consumers' attribute and perception. One of the important advantages of focus groups is the presence of several respondents in the same time, providing a certain synergy. Disadvantages refer mainly to the costs involved and the scarcity of good professionals to conduct the interviews and discussions.

To conclude, we have to keep in mind just how important non-survey data collection techniques are in today's market research. Not only they provide more depth of analysis but they can be performed in significantly less time than surveys and they're more suitable to be employed during the exploratory phases of international marketing research.

2. If she says "Yes" to meeting up later, I'll then ask for her number. If she says "No," I'll still ask for her number because I like her and I want to see her again.

3. Finally, I'll ask her when a good time to call is.

That simple 3-step process will get you a TON of dates.

Setting up the next meeting during the initial interaction is ideal. If you can't do that, get her number and try to set it up later."
