Weightlifting is a subject that we tend to think that we know everything about, in these days there is a great deal of misinformation everywhere and its tough to know what is correct and what isn't.
I got to read an ancient article not too long ago, it was from a magazine that was released before world war 2 in the 1920s and it covered some pointers from great body building legend Charles Atlas.
The pointers in the article were some of the best that I have ever read and whats really good about it is that it still holds up today as well as it did back then, I do not think that any of today's fitness gurus can give advice as good as this, here it is.
1. Set A Concrete Goal
We get lots of this advice from self help gurus today, before world war 2 self help did not exist and yet this exact same advice is given.
In essence you must know precisely what your end result is and work backwards from it, know how much you want to weight and what you will look like than follow a program that goes along with your goals.
2. Never Miss A Single Training Session
Charles Atlas was a dude who never gave up, he worked very hard to become what everyone back than described as "the worlds most perfect man".
The issue is that in the beginning we are enthusiastic to start training however as time goes by we get too involved in the process of the exercises themselves, get bored with it and give up, completely forgetting what exactly we yearned-for in the beginning.
Point is you should by no means skip a single workout, always remind yourself of the purpose of why you started working out.
3. Treat Your Body As If Its Your New Car
When you get a new car do you throw some mud into the engine and expect it to run without problems? yet the engine is made of steel, we are not made of steel and yet we abuse our bodies with all kinds of junk and for some reason we expect ourselves to get muscle gains from working out in the gym.
Treat the body like a new device that you recently bought, take good care of it by putting only the preferred food in it and you will be rewarded with improved results.
Resting enough will also help you gain muscle, the old article that I read pointed out that even back then in the 1920s people had a bad habit of getting less than the optimal amount of sleep.
4. Totally Focus On The Task At Hand
Whenever you come to the gym you may see that there are folks that came there to talk to others as if the gym is a social club and when they finally do work out they seem unfocused.
Your job is to exercise, when you come to the gym you must entirely focus on what you are doing and prevent letting outside noise distract you.
5. "Never Exercise Past Fatigue Point"
Whenever you are tired from doing exercise you ought to stop, in my teenage years I used to force myself to carry on even when I could not, this resulted in overtraining and stagnated my results.
You can not force your body to grow faster than it can.
6. Keep Stress To A Minimum
Nowadays we have scientific proof of how stress will prevent muscle growth, whenever were under stress out bodies release a chemical called cortisol.
Cortisol breaks down our muscle tissue and bones, an excessive amount stress can even end up in an early demise, I've heard stories of guys in their early 20s who had very busy lives getting heart attacks.
And so basically try to look at the finer parts of life and be a little more positive, taking care of this this will have great results with your muscle gains if you are often under pressure.
7. Get A sufficient amount of Water And Air
Charles Atlas advised not merely drinking a lot of water but additionally taking regular baths to unclog your body's skin pores and let the body take in air.
Speaking of breathing Atlas also recommended going outside to get oxygen, we tend to completely forget that hours(or days in the case of some people I know) of sitting inside the house can have very negative effects on our health and it can even slow down muscle gains.
