Architectural models Tips on How to Make

The process for architectural model making any other model making is same. The process starts with designing that should incorporate all the details to be shown to the viewers. Next scaling is vital and needs to be carefully chosen. Materials can be of different kind, only the usage needs to be taken care of. And accessories are to enhance the look of the model, so you are free to choose them as per the requirement.

To build an architectural model one must have a thorough knowledge about building or the site that needs to be constructed. Architectural models are constructed when a replica of a building or a site is required. A realistic model will adhere to the client’s specification highlighting even the minutest details. The process that goes into architectural model making is same for any other type of model- choosing a scale, designing the model, and building it with selected materials. The only difference lies in the expertise of architectural model makers. When done skillfully, a model exactly transforms your vision into reality, becoming a more effective communication tool.

Designing is the initial step. The more effective you design, better are the chances of your success. Consider including all the details into your designing that you intend to show to your viewers. Design the surrounding area of your building as well. Including the landscape area is one way of making the model visually appealing. It also helps in better visualization of the site. Your design should also include the building material as the material types cannot be included in the model.

Scaling is an important element as it has a huge impact on the visualization. Scale should be wisely chosen so that design details are appropriately visible without being too overwhelming on the viewer. For large commercial building or for including landscaping features, smaller scales are used to cover more space which allows the viewers to take in the major architectural features. Larger scale is useful to show textures and specific patterns in interior design. An ideal scale for large models are smaller than 1:100 scale, where each 1/8 scale inch equals a foot.

Architectural model makers use different kind of materials to build an architectural model. The way the materials are used often outweighs the type of material being used. Some models made with inexpensive materials may turn out to be a big hit if based on a good design. Generally, styrene plastic sheets are used in model building. Cut the sheets as per your designs using a straightedge and a hobby knife. Smooth down the edges and fasten the sheets together using plastic cement.

Model accessories are a great way to add realism to the model. You can place doors, windows, light fixtures, staircase, car in the parking, human figure or anything else you wish to make the model attractive. You can paint the model too if some sections need colors.

Now, create a base for the model. You can do it by using open cell spray foam. With a hot wire cutter, cut the foam and shape the texture of the land. Once the land is formed, paint the foam green so that it represents grass. Layout the landscape for the model and include pavements, if any.

Now a day, architectural model makers include all details as far as the scale allows. They believe that it give a realistic vision of the architect and the developer to their clients. Most architectural firms are using large format printing of their images and drawings and also offer computer generated images CGI's and animation to their clients.
